Continuous & Unbroken
by Brenda Joy Lem
Mixed media works of a 3rd generation Canadian
Sponsored by OSAC
October 29 to Dec 19
Over the past two decades Lem, a third generation Chinese-Canadian, has produced mixed-media artwork that refracts her family’s immigrant history and her own cultural identity against the grain of Canada’s wheat-chaffed soil.
Using images related to Moose Jaw, her family and ancestors, Lem layers multiple and transparent images to create a composite picture that compresses time, space and characters into a single moment of ecstatic knowing. Her work is imbued with a Buddhist philosophy that is about cosmic interconnectedness, that all things are linked to, and part of, all others.
In this, her most recent collection of screen prints, Lem’s grandparents, aunts & uncles walk amongst Taoist gods and images associated with Moose Jaw, crossing temporal and cultural borders.
Artworks from Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery Permanent Collection, touring through the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils’ (OSAC) Arts On The Move programme.
